Project Description
Beautiful historic city of Srinagar at the banks of the river Jhelum was the topic for the Urban Design Studio. The group visited Srinagar in the month of September, 2022 for detailed survey. The studio collaborated with INTACH Kashmir Chapter, WRI-India and the Housing Board - J&K for data assistance. During the study the group also had a fruitful interaction with the School of Architecture-IUST.

The studios aimed at understanding the urban fabric and analyze the mix, the density, the spaces between, the way places work and the way we experience them. The core of the investigation was aligned with the narrative that great places are mixed, diverse and connected. Thus the topics were limited to understanding the monotony versus the diversity, scaled urban density, living spaces - (shared, community and connected) and finally legibility. Upon the detailed study and analysis of architecture and the urban fabric the students were asked to design projects that incorporate urbanity by diversifying the urban landscape to accommodate people of every age, family dynamics, income and ability. The final design projects varied from kiosks, provisions for street vendors, adaptive reuse of buildings, retrofitting of urban plazas and waterfront development.
